"Let this be written for a future generation.... The Lord looked down...from heaven He viewed the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death." Ps. 102:18-20
Throughout the world today, prisons are full of criminals, political dissidents, and those imprisoned for religious convictions. Without Christ we are all prisoners to sin, under the sentence of death. Christ came to bring life to all who call upon His Name. But how can they call on His Name unless they have heard? Why should they be condemned to death, when there is a Savior waiting for them to call on His Name?
Pray today for those who are doubly imprisoned-both physically and spiritually. Pray for those attempting to bring light to these dark places.
"The Lord has made His salvation known and revealed His righteousness to the nations.... Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth." Ps. 98:2, 4
The psalmist was deeply aware that God's redemptive acts on Israel's behalf were also played out on a stage before the nations. Israel, called to be a kingdom of priests, had the privilege and responsibility of interpreting these acts to the surrounding peoples. We who have come to know Jesus as Savior and Lord have the same privilege and responsibility, made greater by our knowledge of the completeness of Christ's redemptive work on the cross. What a delight to declare His acts to the nations so that they may respond with joy to their Master!
Pray that the Father will open our lips to tell others of His salvation and righteousness.
"The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us." Jn. 1:14
As we recall Jesus' birth this Christmas Day, we see Almighty God crossing the greatest barriers, which separated Him from man. And in God's initiative to live among us we see the missionary dynamic necessary to reach unreached people groups. Jesus - the missionary Word of God - "became flesh" so that 33 years later He might die and decisively deal with the barrier of sin. The same Word which had created man became man, took on human flesh, and "lived for a while among us." It is now our task to cross other barriers (culture, language, religion) to the unreached peoples and proclaim the "Word" in person!
Pray that as the Father sent His Son, that He will now send us.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Jn. 1:1
God is a missionary God who carries within His heart the desire to communicate His "Word." Not only is He the great Creator, He is also the great Communicator. Amid this week's preparations for Christmas, let's reverently recall the great passages in Scripture, which anticipate and describe the birth of Jesus Christ. Then, let's allow the drama of the great event to give focus to our prayers for the unreached peoples. Christmas is the most "missionary" time of the year!
Pray that God will give us a new zeal to make Him known among the unreached peoples this Christmas season.
"There were shepherds living out in the fields nearby.... An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them." Luke 2:8
Again we can see God's focus on the insignificant and weak people of society. God determined to first send His angels to these humble shepherds in the fields rather than to reveal His glory to the proud religious leaders in the Temple. How quickly those shepherds hurried to Bethlehem to see Christ the Lord! Thousands of peoples today are equally eager to respond to the Good News. Will we give them the chance to hear?
Pray that the Father will help us to expect great things from Him as we attempt great things for Him! Pray that we will never see anyone as being to insignificant to hear the gospel.
