Paul's obligation was not a promise, or a formal contract, but a demand deep within his conscience. Rather than leisurely carrying out some religious responsibility, Paul eagerly fulfilled his debt of gratitude to the One who had paid a great price for his salvation. We, too, are under such an obligation. Imagine the impact of scattered fellowships of believers across the globe who fulfill their obligation to preach the gospel in order to reap a harvest among all peoples! Have you and your church recognized your obligation to proclaim the gospel?
"For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous." Romans 2:13
This verse is very similar to James 1:22, which states, "But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves." Missionary conferences, mission weekends at churches, and mission emphasis weeks at Bible colleges are wonderful in raising awareness of missions. However, some Christians seem to think that if they attend these special meetings, they have fulfilled their duty. Not so! Each Christian needs to play some active part in the Great Commission, whether through giving, praying faithfully, going as missionaries themselves, or sending others.
Pray that the Father will make us doers of His Word, not hearers only.
