Ecc. 11:1-2
"Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again. Give portions to seven, yes to eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon the land."
Solomon's exhortation for us to share our blessings carries with it the reiteration of a major biblical theme: we receive when we give, we are blessed as we bless others, and we experience real life as we experience daily death to self and sin. How difficult it is for us to really believe the truth of such a paradox! How easy it is instead to clutch at our possessions and opportunities so that they won't slip through our fingers. Yet God honors the man or woman willing to take Him at His word. Jesus said, "Only those who throw away their lives for My sake and the gospel's will ever know what it means to really live" (Mark 8:35 LB).
