"(Jesus) made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant...He humbled Himself and became obedient to death.... Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place." Philippians 2:5-11

Because of the humble obedience of Jesus, the Father exalted Him. Jesus did not humble Himself that He might be exalted, but in order that man might be redeemed through His death. How human it is for us to seek ways to become great, even at personal sacrifice and pain. Yet the ones God exalts are those who have given up personal ambition and pride because they have understood His heart and will. If our Master had to humble Himself and learn obedience in order to redeem men, so His disciples also must humble themselves in obedience in order to reveal His glory and goodness.

Pray for Christ-like humility on your part, and the part of your church.

Paul was in prison, but he was rejoicing because his imprisonment had resulted in the spread of the gospel. What a tremendous example for so many of us who vacillate between self-centeredness and sacrificial living! How many of us would rejoice that personal adversity had advanced God's purposes among the nations?

Dear Lord, we pray that we may live so close to You that Your concerns become ours. May it not be said of us that we cared more for personal comfort than for those for whom You died. Help us to see with Your eyes.

The proclamation of God's Kingdom is a frontal attack on rebel-controlled territory that will meet Satan's fiercest resistance and opposition. The battle is essentially spiritual, and those who engage in the conflict must be equipped with the spiritual armor Paul describes. If you intend to involve yourself in the battle-as a sender, mobilizer, missionary or in any other capacity-be prepared for attacks greater than you've ever experienced before.

Lord, give us wisdom and protection as we enter into spiritual conflict.

Pray that God will enable you to live a purposeful and significant life. Ask Him to teach you how to intercede for the unreached so that you can be part of the task of declaring His Name to the peoples of the earth.

Paul teaches in this chapter that if the Body of Christ is working properly, one result will be responsible maturity in each congregation. All children have a self-centered viewpoint. Each of us began life focusing on one important individual-ME. Part of our growing to maturity is gaining a perspective of reality, which focuses attention on others. How many of our churches today, however, still struggle with this preoccupation with themselves and with their own kind of people! A healthy spiritual maturity expresses itself in a congregation's commitment to reach out to others-not just to others like themselves, but to others who have never had an opportunity to hear and obey the gospel.

Lord, lead us into selfless love for the peoples of the earth.

We who experience so much of God's goodness and grace must never forget that there are about 10,000 people groups in the world for whom this description is absolutely accurate.

Lord, move Christian students, churches, and mission agencies to unite in bringing the good news to those who are "far off."

"Praise be to...God, who has blessed us...with every spiritual blessing." Ephesians 1:3
How grateful we are for the blessings the apostle details in this passage! Have we ever considered why God has blessed us? The immediate context suggests that we are blessed so others will "praise His glory" (Vs. 6, 12, 14). But what does that mean in our lives? God's original covenant with Abraham promised him blessings, and those blessings were to be regarded as resources to carry out a mission to "bless all the families of the earth (Zech. 14:17)." Surely our blessings in Christ Jesus are not different. Blessings are not for us alone, but to equip us to carry the good news of Jesus Christ to those who have never heard.

Father, make us a blessing.

Taking the gospel to a people who have never heard it is demanding-physically, mentally, emotionally and most of all spiritually. Yet the harvest comes only after months and years of sowing seed. Satan's major weapons-discouragement, division, disease and delay-are often aimed at those who labor on the front lines of the advance of the gospel. The apostle Paul needed the prayers of the saints. How much more do the frontier missionaries of today!

Pray for those missionaries you know who are taking the gospel to those who have never heard.

Pray that they will not "become weary in doing good."

"For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." Galatians 5:6
In this passage, Paul stresses that it is not our cultural heritage which makes us acceptable to God, but our heart response. We should praise God because we can worship and serve Him without having to use patterns of Hebrew ritual or the cultural forms of the first-century church! God takes special pains to say that each people is free to express worship to Him in patterns appropriate to its own culture. What a celebration we look forward to when those from every "people, tongue, tribe, and nation" will gather around the throne of Jesus Christ to sing His praises!

Thank the Lord that He accepts worship from every people group, including your own!

Many argue against the missionary enterprise today by pointing out the "disruption" caused by "changing the religion" of other people. Paul rightly argued that bringing the good news of the gospel liberates men and women from cruel slavery to "gods which are not gods." Modern Christians often do not realize the torturing fear of spirits that many peoples feel. Only Christ can deliver them from this fear. Only He can set them free to worship and serve the living and true God.

O Lord, help us to see the people groups of this world with your eyes!

"...in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:14
God's covenant promise to Abraham was first that Abraham would be blessed, and then that he would be a blessing to "all the families of the earth." This distribution of blessing has always been God's intention. The Jewish nation often misunderstood God's missionary purpose for them, mistaking His favor for favoritism. Israel sought to "hoard" instead of "herald" the blessing. Paul here emphasizes that God intends that ALL the families of the earth might experience the blessing promised to Abraham.

Paul, of all Christ's apostles, probably had the most intimate knowledge of the Old Testament. After his conversion he spent three years in Arabia, re-studying the Scriptures under the illumination of the Holy Spirit. As Paul came to understand the centrality of God's promises through Abraham, he realized the priority of being a channel of blessing to "all the families of the earth." This priority throughout his ministry resulted in the establishment of culturally appropriate, evangelizing churches among a score of Gentile people groups throughout the Mediterranean world.

Lord, open our eyes as well to the mission themes of Scripture, and use Your Word to lead us to new faith and obedience

Was the apostle Paul too proud to preach the gospel where it had already been proclaimed? No, that was not the issue. He simply wanted to make the best use of his life and spend his energies in planting the church where it had not yet been established. To keep that vision ever visible, one contemporary mission board has even placed its goal prominently in its name: Regions Beyond Missionary Union.

pray - Father, keep us from complacency and satisfaction with what has already been accomplished in world evangelization. Lead us to pray for, send missionaries to, and go to the regions beyond.

Note the two facts especially relevant to the frontier mission movement: missionaries bring the fragrant gospel of Jesus Christ, and that message brings both life...and death! As missionaries fan out around the world into every unreached people group, a sweet spiritual fragrance is released! Many people will be attracted to the marvelous, compelling gospel. Those who respond with faith and obedience will find new life in Christ. But to those who reject the message, there will be death.

pray: O Father, send laborers to occupy those unreached people groups. May Your Word be quickly understood and taken to heart, and may multiplied millions find new life in Christ Jesus.

a few weeks ago i had my first encounter with a Krishna [hindu?] missionary nun ... i have no idea why, but i was gobstopped! :(
speechless with the enthusiasm with which she shared about her [false] faith, i ask myself why i wasn't nearly as enthusiastic to share about The Only Truth that Gives Eternal Life!
WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!!?!
... we both need much prayer!

The Corinthian church was not a "beautiful people" church. But Paul explained that God had chosen them to reveal the folly and weakness of the wise and strong of this world. Neither are today's missionaries generally considered to be "beautiful people" in the world's eyes. But God has used seemingly weak and foolish people to plant His church all around the globe.

Dear God, we need more "weak and foolish" Christians to become missionaries to the unreached peoples!

Neither Isaiah nor the disciples had any idea how far the fame and glory of Christ would go at the time this was written. A few short years before Paul quoted this verse, the idea of sharing the gospel with a Roman soldier was very strange to Peter. Could any of them even imagine what we are now seeing in the world? It once seemed unthinkable to all of us that people would come to the Lord in places like the Punjab, Mongolia and Nepal. Where will the Lord move next? He might just be waiting for you to pray before He moves His almighty hand in one of the world's darkest places!

As you pray next month, pray as if He is waiting for you to intercede for the unreached.

"To the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen." Romans 16:27

So we come to the end of the book of Romans, a book in which God's concern for all nations can be read on virtually every page. There is no more appropriate way to end this study than the way Paul ends the book: giving glory to our Lord Jesus Christ. We need to remember why we are concerned about taking the gospel to the nations: in order to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. All heaven will echo with the praises of people from "every tribe, tongue, and nation." That is why we learn, pray and give every day on behalf of the unreached peoples!

"Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God." 1 Corinthians 1:22-24 The Corinthian church had both Jewish and Gentile members. Here Paul illustrates for them how people from both Jewish and Greek cultures often responded to the gospel. Looking for attesting signs to be done by the Messiah, most Jews stumbled on the fact of Jesus' crucifixion. To the wisdom-seeking Greeks, the whole idea of the crucifixion was foolishness. But some from each group saw that Christ is the power and wisdom of God.
pray: Heavenly Father, lead Your missionaries today to those yet unreached people groups, and grant that men and women may see and believe Your power and wisdom in Christ.

"Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God." Romans 15:7
Chapter 14 and the first few verses of chapter 15 deal with issues of conscience in the life of the church. Those strong in faith are instructed not to do anything that would disturb the faith of those not so strong. Paul warns them against putting stumbling blocks in the way of others. Believers are to accept one another as Christ has accepted us: unconditionally. Those who are missions-minded often fall into temptation to be critical of those who don't yet have a concern for all nations. Missions-fanatics should be careful to win their brethren to the cause through love and acceptance.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will teach us to accept other believers who do not share our concerns. Pray against any form of self-righteousness.
Romans 15:20
"It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation."
This verse could be the motto of all frontier mission-minded Christians! Paul was certainly a leader in the early Church both in spiritual and organizational matters. But his heart was always concerned with the frontiers of the gospel, where Christ had not been named. Even with all of his pastoral and leadership duties among new and struggling churches, he pressed on. Of course there are many people who need to be won to Christ here at home and in other cultures that already have a church of their own. And certainly new Christians must be trained well. Yet we must not forget Paul's example.

Pray that the Lord will foster in our churches this same ambition to preach the gospel where Christ is not named.

Many people describe missionaries as the legs in the body of Christ. They do the stepping out; without legs, the body would go nowhere, stagnated and growing fat. But the legs would be nothing without the rest of the body. The head, of course, is Christ. Congregations can be seen as the trunk, to provide vital support functions for the legs. The legs cannot be strong unless the trunk is strong as well. Rejoice today that even though you may never be able to be Christ's legs by becoming a missionary, you can be a vital part of the missionary enterprise through your financial and prayer support.

Have you ever thought about the anatomy of a missionary? His tongue has knots in it from over-exertion in learning new languages. His knees have calluses from all-night prayer meetings. But his feet are gorgeous! All kidding aside, missionaries come in all shapes, sizes, and most ages. They are pretty much, as Jim Elliot once said, "...just a bunch of nobodies trying to exalt Somebody. In fact, they're pretty much the same kind of folks as you and your family." Have you ever seriously thought of becoming a missionary?

Ask God if he wants to give your feet a facelift!

"For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile-the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for 'Everyone who calls on the Name of the Lord will be saved.' " - Romans 10:12-13
Paul's point here is that the path of faith is clearly open to both Jews and Gentiles. In a restatement of a major theme of the book-righteousness obtained by faith-Paul very clearly reveals God's unlimited plan for all peoples. Note the absolute terms used. "No difference," "Lord of all," "all who call upon Him," "everyone."

food for thought!! It wasn't so long ago that some of our ancestors were what we call unreached peoples. But God in His sovereignty revealed Himself to them in Christ.

"Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved." - Romans 10:1
Here Paul was again showing his concern for his own people group, the zealous Jews of his day. His heart yearned for them, and he spent time on his knees in prayer for their salvation. This was in addition to his willingness to accept their punishment for rejecting Christ (Romans 9:3)! We, as Paul, ought not let our zeal for the unreached peoples diminish our concern for the lost of our own people group. But our concern for our own people must not overshadow our zeal for the unreached peoples, either.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will give us His love for those around us and for unreached peoples.

Romans 9:3
"For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, the people of Israel."
Wait a minute! Isn't this the same writer who only a few chapters ago assured us of the death that awaits those cut off from Christ? Yes, it is. His love for his own people even led him to wish to suffer their punishment for rejecting Christ. Note, however, that even though Paul loved his fellow Jews that much, he spent his life ministering among the Gentiles!

Father, give us more men and women who-in spite of their love for the Church and all of the needs here at home-will bring the good news to the unreached peoples.

We hope for the glory to be revealed to us in eternity, and we wait for it patiently. We must persevere and go on, believing that it will happen. We must also believe that there will be a Church for those peoples who don't yet have one in their cultural sphere. Can we persevere and eagerly work until every Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, Animistic, and Hindu people group has a church community of its own? Some well-meaning Christians-even some deeply involved in missions-have expressed doubts about our ability to cross the political and cultural frontiers separating the unreached peoples from the gospel.

Pray for more missionaries and leaders who will hope for what we do not yet have-a Church for every people!

Our world abounds in things of the flesh which compete with the things of the Spirit for our attention. Television, magazines, and the Internet-not inherently bad in themselves-often contain material which takes our minds away from the Spirit and onto the things of the flesh. One major reason for this Global Prayer Digest is to help us to set our minds on the things of the Spirit. We daily read of God's concern for all nations, what He has done in the past for them, what He is doing now, and what still needs to be done to bring the gospel to every one of them.

Ask God to help you keep your mind on the things of the Spirit today-including prayer for the unreached peoples!

* Christ manifest His victory & preemimence over every obstacle hindering Edward from coming to Jesus in repentance & faith!

* reveal Christ as INFINITELY desirable & INFINITELY satisfying to Edward, bringing him to True Repentance & Faith before it's too late!

* we'd see Edward in heaven worshipping The Lamb because He's Worthy!! along with others there because he in turn passed on this gospel & didn't keep it to himself!

- also met Sean, 1st timer along with many others i didn't meet!

* give them a Divine discontent to cause them to hunger & thirst after, look for & reach out to find the only One who can give them right relationship with their Creator God -- Jesus!
* reveal Jesus as Lord to these precious souls, bring them to repentance & faith in The Only Saviour before it's too late!
* provide them with accomodation/jobs that will go towards the ends prayed for above :)
* work by His Spirit through all the 'English corners' globally to draw lost souls into Living, Personal Relationship with Himself!
* Nations would be impacted as they send their bright future leaders abroad to study English!
* have mercy on them & send them back to 'home' eternally-changed souls, to join the missionary force He's raising up there!

* provide more teachers/ helpers to reduce group sizes for better quality time with students or give us better skills in dealing with big groups!!

"Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation." Romans 5:11
The wonderful news is that He has made provision to reconcile us to Himself through the blood of Christ. He knew that we were weak sinners, even enemies. How great is our reconciliation! In this we rejoice! And God yearns that people everywhere be reconciled to Himself (cf. 1 Timothy 2:4). Because we are His body on earth, He has given us the message and the ministry of reconciliation (cf. 2 Corinthians 5:18, 19). Will we rejoice as we take this message to a lost and dying world?

pray: Jesus, thank You again that You have reconciled us to God. Thrill us with the ministry of reconciliation that is ours.

One source of Abraham's great faith was his confidence that God was able to raise the dead. Specifically, he believed that God could raise Isaac-his only son-from the dead if Isaac were sacrificed in response to God's command. Christians today need the same kind of faith. In many churches, a once strong missions thrust has died, succumbing to disinterest, disobedience, and perhaps despair. Interest and action among students today, while improving, is lethargic compared to the heyday of the Student Volunteer Movement 100 years ago.

Pray that God will bring back to life the portions of His body that are dead to the cause of the unreached peoples.

* God in His mercy would not let Raj & Ronny waste their lives giving glory to anyone/anything else but save them so they might bring pleasure to Him!

The passage of Romans 3:21-29 is a glorious one, proclaiming that we are justified not by the outward performance of the works of the Law, but by an inward heart of obedience and faith. The path to becoming righteous in God's sight is the same for all men-"the gift of His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus" (v.24). Meditate on this great truth today. The very God that we worship is the same God over the entire human race. He's the God of Animists, Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Taoists, Buddhists, and others. They may not know it, but He is their God. How He longs to be their Savior, too! What a wonder it is that He has entrusted us with the gospel to share with them.

Pray that the Father will help us to see the unreached peoples as He does.

"What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God's faithfulness? Not at all!" Romans 3:3-4
What if some Christians today really believe that we need not go to the unreached peoples, or that the task is impossible? Would that render null and void God's command to go and His promise that the unreached peoples will be reached? Absolutely not! Yet we often find both of these attitudes today. Some Christians don't really believe that the Lord meant us to go to all the nations with the gospel. Others may believe the command, but are overwhelmed and totally discouraged by the immensity of the task.

pray: Father, we want to be faithful to carry Your gospel to the ends of the earth.
